just thought I would throw this up having now confirmed my primary gearbox is deader than a doorknob, has anyone done this conversion to a car and what was involved, having had a chat with the nice lads on the chicken farm it would appear its the two gearboxes, running extra vaccumn line for the second disc and they said it might also involve the bulkhead vaccumn valve and a different propshaft?
if someone could help with confirming/ pointing out mistakes in the above I would be most grateful

Sticking a 66 trans in a 46?
1) Prop is the same (I think) 2) 46 Electro Vacuum Valve is retained. 3) Extra vacuum pipework to addition primary drum.
*Beware* centrifugal weighting of primary unit is different so might not make as good a engine/gearing combo.
I would rebuild what you have (cannibalising bits from a 66 primary if needed) rather than attempt a straight swap.

I think the gearing would be higher so it would be slower accellerating but higher top end? Which if you are doing motorway work could be handy. We've got both 46 and 66 varios. Personally if you've got to strip out the whole vario then a swap over should be easier than a rebuild. 46 varios can be a pain, some can chew belts prematurely and if they break then you're left stranded. Whichever way you go Ni ck, we've got the parts here.

Personally.....as long as you have to drop the Vario it will be just as easy to swap the Bearing and put everything back. Changing to a 66 requires that you swap the Secondary as well. The benefits are minimal but the work is extensive. John

I'm nearly done on this. Scanned a load of pages (40-odd) 600dpi. Converted to 1bit black & white. Every single scan cleaned up in GIMP. 44 and 46 pages colour-coded appropriately. Just working now on assembling all the TIFF files into a searchable PDF document.... No point in doing half-a-job.
