I own a twin Sister to Matt's "Goldie" which I am very proud of.
"Butterscotch" is a 1976 DAF 46 (Type 23) Super Deluxe saloon which came from the London area originally.
This is what I purchased in March, 2005-just after she arrived in the States. Butterscotsch had been an RAC recovery and the sticker was still afixed to the windscreen.
After getting her home I found the reason for the recovery.....LOL
One of the spark plug wire ends had gone missing so it was only running on one cylinder. That was quickly fixed and she ran like a swiss watch. I found no other reasons why the car should have been put on the hook.
I decided to tackle and re-do the body.
Not that Butterscotch was in bad condition but there were a few familiar "DAF Rust Issues" needing attention.
One really bad place I found was the Right front wing...it had been replaced and then overfilled with plastic filler so there was no ridge showing anymore.
The other wing also needed major surgery in order to support the headlamp assembly.
The motor was given a good cleaning, testing and re-painting out of the car and then replaced after making sure everything was in proper working order.
The underside was also given a complete cleaning and both CV shafts were serviced with new grease as well as boots.
I fabricated my own exhaust system which actually ended up giving me a few more horsepower. I used 1 1/2 inch pipe and a free flow rear muffler (in place of the 1 1/4 inch original size pipe and a baffled muffler). ;D
After a few days of road testing (read: pestering the neighborhood) I prepped the car for paint.
;D
Fresh out the paint shop...and Butterscotch is looking great again.
After 3 car shows this happened............
I made the mistake of re-using the original belt and it blew at 42,000 miles.
New Roulunds belt installed very quickly after that incident....I won't EVER make that mistake again. ;D
After 8 Car Show trophies this is how Butterscotch looks today.
The DAF took just over 24 months to restore back to a proper looking and reliable running car. It is the only RHD in my collection.
