Many thanks macplaxton, I have considered other options and I'm pretty sure that the vibration at 50mph that I can drive through is a wheel related vibration although all the tyres are new continentals. I think the information you've sent me gives me the answer: my general feeling was that it was a belt hum (big belts = big hum!). I suspect I may have the belts over-tightened and like the tech bulletin says this is stopping the centrifugal weights reaching their stops and the belt is being crushed. I'll have another go at them this coming weekend.
In general I just like to say a big 'Thank you' to you for all the help you've given me, its much appreciated and I'd be very stuck without it!

If there is more than a certain amount of difference in gap between either side, it's in the book to swap them side for side (maintain direction of rotation of the belts after first fitting)
The Service Bulletin at the very end is rather optimistic. Even without stretch, wear on the belt shoulders will increase the effective length and adjustment will still be needed, (even if less frequently).
The only thing I remember about Roulunds belts were the rumble and squawk over the first 20 yards or so first run of the day. The rest of the time they were fine. There was one occasion when I was getting an imbalance, but one of the vacuum pipes had come off the o/s primary to it was doing something slightly different to the other side. Worth a quick look given all their in and out movement.

Hi, I had all the wheels rebalanced which got rid of the awful shaking at 55mph and reset the belt tension to a 1.5mm gap which has stopped the howling at speed but the vibration/resonance is still there in the background and horrid at 70mph. I'm pretty certain now its an imbalance in the transmission so I was wondering if I could come and see you all one Saturday if you down doing Daf stuff for an opinion and also if you think its the transmission if you know where I could get a replacement as I suspect they're like rocking horse poo to come by.

Well done and some good progress. I regret that you're right, 55 transmissions are hard to come by and not something we have in abundance at ED HQ. you're quite welcome to come in for a second opinion, Sunday afternoons work best for us and the kettle will always be on, just let us know!

Many thanks, I'm kind of hoping that you'll go up the road in Tina, feel what I'm on about and go "oh I know what that is, you've done something wrong with........". Its always a risk putting an unknown car back on the road.
