didn't RAC patrolmen used to do their best to fit parts at the roadside if you had them to hand? Every RAC patrolman I encountered* ran a mile. Hats off to the AA though, as they always seemed hell bent in avoiding doing a relay. I haven't had any separate breakdown cover in place since....oooohh....2003. Had the odd breakdown since, but usually at the start/end of journey and not en-route. Worst offender was the Citroen GS, as although the car has been otherwise reliable, those pesky SEV cassette points and inaccessible dizzy left me in the lurch 3 times, but as it was fairly local, it was a case of phone-a-friend (with car trailer ). The only other time I've phoned-a-friend was the starter on the BB finally (yes, I know I should of changed it sooner) giving up outside a motor factors in Finglas. On the whole though, my breakdown/mileage ratio is pretty good and I'll continue to self-insure. *before being effectively banned.

Well, you may laugh but many years ago I broke down on the A1 outside a crematorium no less due to a near overheating incident in my mk3 Cortina. The old boy who'd owned her from new had a mechanic do all the servicing on the driveway and one thing said mechanic did was replace the water pump (he even rolled up the receipt for the new part and inserted the rolled up paper work beneath the jubilee clip securing the water pipe) however he hadn't tensioned the belt well or fastened a clip properly, can't remember exactly what now. A similar AA old boy attended the breakdown and saw that the gasket had blown. He removed the pump and made a gasket for it using a cardboard box and some hermatite before putting it back together. The crematorium supplied me with some water (later coolant was added) and off I went. The repair became permanent and held ever since. Much better than being towed to the nearest Ford dealership for repairs!

its been off road 20 years.. an the fact theres a set of rods and pistons in the footwell says it has engine problems I think that's a minor problem. I know of possibly 2 engines suitable both Daimler about theta era or slightly earlier due to one having a modern merc diesel fitted now cruises at 80 fine. And one in kent in a whole car. Apparently parts are easier than daf. go for it after giving me your dafs he he he

Yes it was complete with box and I think he used a Sherpa van rear exel. I think the car cost him £350 rotten body and the axel 250 as it's a hot rodders favorite. I would love a 30s car something like Austin 10 with a charade diese. It's been done already in practical classics last year or the year b4 i love sleepers as I call them either real scruffy but goes like *+¥%# of a shovel or real old standard looking but goes like modern. Speed stopping and reliable. I think it's an art. Hence daf totaly wrong but usable so wrong it's right in fact. I know the 33 is pushing it a bit but it is still useable in a pervers way just like a 2cv or beetle is.

The box is not up to it really but the rear exel will be the first to pop my bros being earlier is a worm drive not a planet gear type.
Go for it even an old Mondao engine will do it you never know its easy when you get into it. Prop shafts are real easy to make or shorten or lengthen. You can balance them with jubilee clips if your brave of have the boredom factor to do it but I had one balanced for about 35 quid last time I made one. Get the car and then make up adaptors for things like wheels to put the originals back on it. The engine bay is long enough you can always get the rad rebuilt to use the old one with a thick core or put the Mondao one behind it with a fan on it. I would use as much old as pos ie rad fan but for economy sake you can use the donors stuff instead. You will be surprised how good drum brakes with servos can be.

Thinking about a hire car for ED5. Think this might just be the ticket. 2014 "Mange Rover" Martin may like this. John
