Time for some Basil action. Sian was out in him today and the radio cut out. That's not a problem. The problem is that, when I went out to look, his bonnet release (literally) came off in my hand - after releasing the bonnet, of course! The little welded bracket that attches it to the back of the dash has broken its welds so it's just hanging by the operating rod and there's absolutely no way you can get enough pressure on that rod to latch the bonnet without it. I also can't see any way to safely re-weld it with the dash in place - far too much plastic, wiring and assorted other combustibles to go poking round n there with a MIG, let alone an arc welder

Not sure - there's a LOT of strain on it thanks to the leverage involved. Whatever I do (apart from re-welding) will mean making up a complete new bracket because the old one is basically a flat tag about an inch square and 3/16 thick welded end-on to the dash tube. May have fun getting the angles and clearances right as well cos it looks like the over-centre action is what actually locks the bonnet catches. All lying on my aging back over the edge of a seat

Time for those rally type quick release catches instead.
