Thanks, gentlemen, it all sounds very encouraging. I was having visions of having to replace the diaphragms in the torrential rain while lying in a pool of mud under the car. Thankfully this doesn't appear to be necessary (...for now !).
I've ordered a set of silicon vacuum hoses to replace the tired originals, I'm tempted to also take the vacuum control thingy apart to clean it and possibly replace the o-rings. Does anybody know what size said o-rings are ?
In other DAF-related news, I've won that ebay auction for the 66 bits. They're only round the corner in Dorset and there seem to be quite a few useful bits for the money. I just hope I will manage to fit the lot in my workhorse 740...
My part-worns have also arrived, and appear to be in excellent condition. All I need now is for the weather to get better so I can refurb my wheels !

Thankfully this doesn't appear to be necessary (...for now !). Dinnae speak so soon! 66s are notorious for munching the diaphragms up due to the sharp casting flash on the aluminium support rings. Give it a blow (or suck) test. I've ordered a set of silicon vacuum hoses to replace the tired originals, If they are as stretchy/grabby/springy as the originals, no additional clamping is required. If they are hard/smooth/slide then you have the additional job of keeping them on. I'm tempted to also take the vacuum control thingy apart to clean it and possibly replace the o-rings. Does anybody know what size said o-rings are ? It's not the O-rings that fail, it's the mushrooms. I've got full Born Built Beauties repair kits here. 16 quid all-in. Kit has a pair of mushroom rubbers, pair of O-rings and protection diode (for Volvo tachometric relay set-ups) and full instructions. Best to test it first though, so grab a Vacuum gauge as they can still work, but be out-of-spec (e.g. have a slight leak-away) Anyway, I'm back home now, on a proper computer and have the Blue Books handy....

I've been wondering what I should do about Ena's interior, which is somewhat past its prime. The dashboard, door panels and headlining are thoroughly acceptable and will only require a good clean with Autoglym interior shampoo. The carpet is missing, but Ken had sourced an excellent replacement which he most kindly gave me. This leaves the seats. All of them are rather mucky and time has not been gentle to the thin fabric covering. The best option would be to have them professionally recovered, but I could never justify the expense. A tartan blanket across the top of the rear seat would be a cheap and functional solution, but it wouldn't feel quite right for the car and I would still have to do something with the front seats. The option of seat covers was considered, but after a bit of research I realised they would feel even less right for the car, as the seat cover market seems to only cater for taxi drivers (wipe-clean vinyl covers), boy racers (bucket seat style covers in fetching red) and obese unattractive young women (pink covers with playboy logos). Luckily, earlier today a fellow Autoshitter posted a link to an ebay auction for this magnificent product : Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a new-old-stock set of the finest 1970s seat covers, in real fake fur ! To make things even better, they come in a fetching 'honey' colour that is a pretty good match for Ena's original interior ! Needless to say, they have been duly purchased and are on their way to Fraud towers.

Result! I'm liking that a lot! I do have a similar set in shocking right pink btw (probably shouldn't admit to this) but don't have a suitable candidate to fit them too...

I had a set that was black with a silver stripe that matched the dashboard in Gladys. I also know how to re-upholster car seats now. A useful skill with the exception that the seats in my current DAF are near on perfect.
