Went to a car show today ( details a bit later in the right place ), about 1hr away, and Goldie drove lovely on both motorways and country lanes. After parking up, the sun came up and was actually very hot. Anyway, when we started to leave the show ( about 5 1/2 hrs later ), Goldie had a bit of a moment. Gearstick was in forward, pulled the choke out, turned the ignition, and there was a very loud squeal from the rear, like a fan belt going, only louder and not as high pitched .. it certainly got everyones attention. Turned her off, checked that the gearstick was in the correct position, which is was, and tried again with the choke in. It was fine, but the slightest acceleration and it made the noise again, so turned her off again. We were heading back with friends, so figured we'd try again, and see how we got on ... we have RAC just on case Started again, choke in, no noise. Pulled off, slight noise, then it stopped, and she drove home fine, again on country lanes and motorways, averaging about 60mph. Could the fact that she was sitting in the sun all day affected the belt, or does it sound like something a bit more serious ? After getting home, changing between forward and reverse did feel a little clunky, but certainly not grindy or difficult. After turning Goldie off, and then on again, the gear changing felt a bit smoother. Any ideas anyone ?

Time for a routine belt tensioning session.
Sitting in the sun won't have affected it particularly but they tend to get to the "first slip" stage suddenly then squeal whenever they're cold.

Just a matter of adjusting the belt.
Jack up the back of the car and drop the vario cover. Undo lock nuts and turn adjuster until there is a 2mm gap between the rear pulley halves. Grasp both wheels (with a friend) and turn them forwards about 8 times and then back the same, recheck the gap and do up the locknuts belt tensioning is a regular job, if its not done the belt life will be significantly reduced.

We thought it sounded like the belt slipping, so that's good to know that that is what it is. Will have to see about getting it adjusted .. it's quite alarning to hear it for the first time
