thanks John , IF.....chosen , they want to update 1 or 2 things , the mechanic certainly seems to have done his Daf research , wants to convert to 12V , to make it more suitable for modern use for my daughter , and new belts from the club .. .He also knows about the surface rust on the rear pulleys damaging belts - he asked if they can be re-chromed , but I dont know the answer to that ? what would you chaps suggest ? .........so fingers crossed for the next 14 days ... , and Jammy Dodgers by the box-load on stand-by for ED3 ! ;D

A 12 volt conversion is fairly simple and more reliable...no doubt.
As far as chrome... I have yet to hear of a plating service that will apply a Chrome finish to Stainless (at least not here). Most will not even consider doing it and will recommend having it re-polished and/or buffed. Plain Steel is one thing, but Stainless Steel is a horse of a different colour. Personally I have had very good luck bringing back the Vario faces just be sanding and a good polish (Belt friction, with use, should do the final polish and keep them shiney)
Can you post a photo of the pulley faces ??

Well if someone has done their DAF homework fully, then they'd know that there are two sorts of pulley halves depending on year of manufacture. 1) Stainless steel. 2) Chrome plated mild steel.

And 32s seem to have chrome plated mild steel (at least, Tilly does as a '66)
As for 12v conversion, I can see the attraction for cheap batteries and more accessories but, honestly, a well sorted 6v car is just as reliable. We run 2 of them here - including Betty with her halogen lights, halogen spots and 40 Watt per channel stereo - and haven't had problems with 6v and a dynamo.
