Hi ya i know i am new but i am keen. Can you let me know if the engines on these little old dafs are a week spot ? I ask because i have seen a few posts and threads on dead seized and generally duff engines is this because the bits are rare or the engines are week or they are just long in the tooth could it be (with the greatest respect) owners are frightened to rebuild them. i don't know the answers does any one on here can you let me know the low down on these engines.

Hi Austin and welcome. Generally the air cooled engines are bullet-proof and rarely go wrong. I managed to kill a 750 due to heat seize. Rewind on the ED thread a few months back and you'll see the strip-down. This was a 40k miler which had been off the road at least 8 years prior to my ownership and consensus at the time was that some sludgy oil had blocked an oilway creating starvation which lead to the big end bearings on one cylinder crumbling away to nothing, so the big end had tried to turn round with the crank. Parts for the 750/850 can be hard to obtain, that's why I had slight o/size mains (£80 a pair as opposed to €260 - the cheapest my engine shop could find), and I had the big ends reclaimed to fit Ford Pinto shells which are easier to come by. I'm not sure what availability is via DCN, possibly better if you buy membership. Haven't started the rebuild yet but you'll see it here when I do. The water cooled engines have far greater parts back up. Water pumps are the Achilles heal and removal can leave snapped studs in head scenario. Timing chains can get noisy and on the 1100cc engines a knackered dizzy can seize the engine. Hope this helps and am sure others will add to this. Pete.

DAF Nut
Those who say it can't be done, should not interupt the people doing it !

Generally.... It is not the DAF engines which are the weak point. The main weak points on the "A" DAFs are; 1. Intake Manifold hotspot pipes 2. Propshafts (if the driver has not learned the RULES of DAF driving). Weak points on the "B" models Pete has already explained. John

my engine again had been out of commision for 9 years, and put back into normal duties, it did 3k before it failed, looking at the piston I believe the top rings had been stuck in the piston since she was back on the road, so for just the oil control ring to keep it running for that long says to me they are not that weak.. bearing sizes (journal faces) are massive, pistons and oversize pistons are available up to +1mm, but I think the reason people dont rebuild is there was still a small supply of s/hand motors, this sadly is getting less and less the case now, I will be starting the rebuild of my engine in the new year, I am looking forward to it too, just need to sort out a nearside cylinder head
