Hmm, they are expensive bits of kit. I have a new offside one which cost 150 yoyos. You'll need to go to DAF Club Nederland unless you strike it lucky on Marketplatz. Most owners mend and make do so your average one will have been welded several times over by now. Never heard of anyone taking one apart for a bit of a Turkish though...

I keep meaning to but that's cos I'm tight-fisted and know I should be able to rebuild it cheaper than those Dutch guys ;D Somehow I haven't found time to try yet so I'll be interested to see what happens with this one!

Hey Guys thanks for the replies. The story is that I thought I was getting a smell of exhaust fumes, and as my daughter has become fond of driving VUF, I was concerned. What I did was to use an old out of calibration Flue Gas Analyser, and I was getting CO out of the windscreen vents. I have found that in fact the exhaust pipe passing through the hex is a thick strong tube, and was intact, so all I needed to do was cut of the end and make a new termination, but hey ho. I'm pretty confident I can rebuild it, but I might just make fins out of steel, I want a functioning heater, but don't expect to drive much in extreme cold so I'll take my chances. I will post more pictures and explain my progress. Don't laugh! Attachments:

Ah, that explains it! Yes, a whiff of CO2 is to be expected in air-cooled DAFs, I usually just crack the quarterlight open to draw any fumes out, but tbh they don't bother me too much, the amount of other stuff I've inhaled it's nothing really. All part of the DAF appeal IMHO.

OK...I see no real damage which cannot be put back together rather quickly.
My suggestion (after you have spot welded everything together) is to seal the exterior pipes where they meet the shroud with some high temperature epoxy. This should eliminate any and all gases from escaping into the car.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a silent killer. It is odourless, colourless, tasteless. Formed from incomplete combustion. (Think dodgy central heating boilers) Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) is also mainly odourless (at high concentrations it has a bit of a sour whiff), colourless, bit of a sour taste. Exhaust fume whiff I would have thought was mainly down to the Hydrocarbons, oxides of Sulphur and oxides of Nitrogen, but then again I ain't no chemist. I'll have to sniff the Citroen out. That has a mighty fine heater for an air-cooled lump.

That's right Mac, I did say CO, running at over 200ppm at the windscreen vents. On reflection if they are available I have no objection to a new pair of hex, any info?

I believe you can get them through DAF Club Nederland but they are expensive and they will want yours in part exchange to recondition (so, send them the crappiest, nastiest 2nd hand one that you have and keep the other as a spare ) but you'd need to be a member first - 40 yoyos p/a iirc - and you can only pay by bank transfer...it all adds up. Or try Danny at DAFHobby, you never know, he might be able to link you up with one... www.dafhobby.nl
