Hi all, I'm busy restoring/decommissioning my 66 kombi after being sat in a shed for 20 years. So far so good and after the usual late nights, weekends and countless bruised bones I now have him running and moving. My problem, on one face of the right secondary pulley there is some corrosion, resulting in an increase in running noise, markedly so too! I am disabled so every job I do has a challenge for me on the car, at this stage I do not want to be faced with removing the whole transmission. I can get reasonably good access to the pulley, my question is this, Is it okay to attempt to clean up the rust and what with? I thought of using an oil stone and wet emery paper. I would be really grateful for any guidance or help.

No problem at all taking the corrosion off, but it's a bit of a pig to get into. Emery cloth is as good as anything, don't try to get rid of any pitting, just rub it down enough to remove any lumps or "sharpness" then finish with a rust converter like Kurust - avoid getting any wet chemicals on the belts though.
Once it's back in use properly the belts will tend to polish them up and keep them clean.

Good advise Joe Steve..I'm guessing you will keep the old belts on the car,great for cleaning up the pulleys but please bear in mind they might need changing sooner rather than later

Smashing,. Thanks for the help, feel a bit more confident to tackle it now. I have new belts but thought I would stay with the originals for now until the 66 has a few miles post its extended slumber, wouldn't want to ruin a new set!
