Well tonight I decide to pick up the crank that was sitting in the corner of the shed and remove the 4 sheared studs. The studs sheared when the flywheel parted company with the rest of the engine (no me guv, it was the Revving Rev ) Drilled some holes in the studs, got a screw thread stud extractor out. Then disappeared to get the camera battery charged up. DSCF6921.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr Two out, two to go. DSCF6930.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr Start on number three... I've struggled on and so far still haven't got them out... ...but at least my extractors are still in one piece.

Further investigation of the flywheel.....I don't remember touching this at all (bar measuring the bearing ID) Bearing nudged out: DSCF6939.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr Remainder of bolts along with their wave washers: DSCF6940.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr The two dowel pins: DSCF6941.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr Looking back two pictures, they don't seem to have been sheared. Looks like at some stage in the game, the locating dowels weren't fitted properly, leaving the 4 setscrews to try and locate a big heavy flywheel - which was always going to end in tears. A quick flick through the books and looking at the bolt holes says it's an UNF threaded crank. DAF_SB_E.2-036.jpg by macplaxton, on Flickr DAF_SB_E.2-036_WSM.jpg by macplaxton, on Flickr Think it might be an opportunity to modify the crank holes and flywheel to take proper bolts to assist in location.

Well fancy that! Yes, I would be inclined to if it were within my abilities.
I seem to remember Gavina's flywheel bolts being M8s but the bolts are not at hand for me to check.

Gavina's probably are, given her age. The M8s are bolts, rather than setscrews, so they aren't threaded all the way up to the head. No real joy in getting these last two out. I think I've messed the thread on one of them anyway. Time to call in the machine shop to recover my balls up. Given all the other things I've got to do (TV licence, Motor Tax), this'll be on the back burner again for a while.
