Should not be a major problem.... A friend in Holland put one in a DAF 55. John

What's tired about the 1.3? Those Cleon engines should go on, and on, and on, and on.......... There are quite a lot minor things to consider with the B14.x E engines. The block and head goes in okay. It's all the other bits. (I'm thinking here carb / manifolds / ignition) (John, you can put a lot of things in a DAF 55 if you put your mind to it / hack it about )

Hi, the engine has covered 98000 miles and has a full service history, it runs really well but suffers from what I would call piston slap especially when cold, once warmed up its fine. It would be far cheaper and quicker to replace with B14 than either having my original reconditioned or buying one off the shelf.
I'll do some more reading up but wondered if others have done it before me. I already have a lovely low mileage 340 and would like very much to get my Volvo 66 estate back on the road. Havedone much work already and seeing as I believe there are only about 20 survivors of my model 66 I think it needs to be seen and used. Really appreciate the forums and clubs too. Any advice etc is always muchly appreciated.

Humm,
The Cleon suffers from endemic piston slap as do most short skirt engine designs. With the B130/B14 range the "cold slap" is caused by the differential expansion rate of the liners and pistons during the warm up phase.
For some reason the B14.4Es of 83 & 84 were particularly bad. (the wife had an 84 340 bought new with which you could tell the outside air temperature by how long it took the pistons to shut up - the slap was there new - and 22 years later (yes we really did have the car that long) the slap was exactly the same (80.000k).
In 1986 Volvo introduced a change in piston design called "Duotherm" which incorporated a steel band in the piston skirt which helped equalise the expansion rate of the piston.
IF the ONLY reason for changing the engine is "slap" - and it is is otherwise performing well I really would reconsider. Check compressions and cyl.leakage, drain the oil and check for swarf and metal dust, if oil consumption is OK and engine is not otherwise noisy there is probably not a lot wrong!
