Hi everyone. My name is Alex - I confused matters on the d.o.c forum by choosing the name 'munceyboyjoe' - so if you have known me as Joe - apologies for the misunderstanding. For the past couple of years (my first car) - I have owned the blue Marathon 66 Coupe that featured in Practical Classics a few years back when Pedro was the owner. The car is currently brakeless and needing a bit of tlc to the bodywork in a couple of places, but still looks nice. Started it up yesterday after a few months covered up. Hoping to get the brakes sorted and a new Mot within the next two weeks - then maybe attend an Essex meet and wangle some welding!

Hi Alex and welcome to the forum!Nice to see you here and would be great if you can make the weekender. I'm sure there will be some welding going on too! I'd love to see the coupe in the flesh as I've not seen her yet but you'll still be welcome if she's not ready in time.

Thanks for the welcome guys! At the moment there is a small hole and a bit of rot on one of the wings - if this suits the tig set up then it might be! There might be a simpler repair I could make but we shall see.
One way or another I am definitely hoping to come down for a visit.
I'd love to properly fettle this car at some point - it would be nice to be able to look at it with the eyes of Sam Glover and work out which perishables could do with replacing.
My long term ambitions for this little Daf (depending on funds) are to make it everyday usable with some of the below:
- electric ignition - poly bushes where appropriate - full set of fresh hoses (silicon perhaps?!) - halogen bulbs - dynaxed underbody - working radio of some kind!
Then of course the well worn fantasy of winning the lottery and having the entire shell stripped by surface processing or someone along those lines and building it up to be perfect. We can dream eh.

sounds a good idea alex but as for the welding a tig will only burn more holes..its to heavy for light steel.. ..a mig is best..of course,if anybody can tig it,then it will be joe ;D

The TIG worked well for Paul Bashford's exhaust even if that TIG is better suited to welding 'ship hull plates', as Mr Horner will attest. Still, Joe is our master welder and he might even get the MIG working properly, who knows? The other mods you mention are all achievable. I know Lumenition makes electronic ignition for the for pot - www.lumenition.com (have enquired as to one for the twin air-cooled but not holding my breath) and you should be able to find a polybush kit. I've made both these mods to my Rover SD1 and they do make a difference. Likewise you should be able to find silicon hoses in a nice shade of blue to match your paint.

Hello Alex (or Joe ;D)...glad to see you and the Blue Beauty on this forum. As you well know there is ALWAYS something to do with a Classic car or an improvement to make driving more enjoyable. As you said, this all costs money which we don't always have. Patience is the key to getting all this done. John

Hi John, you are quite right of course! As long as my little steps are in a coherent direction I'm sure this Daf will slowly get better.

Little update - managed to bodge together the rubber bumper section with some glue and the 66 is currently sitting in my local garage awaiting a new mot (I hope it's in the garage as it's raining steady outside).
Popped in this morning to check for progress, turns out the brake failure was down to a burst brake pipe. That's fuel line, break pipe and radiator hose all perished within 12 months or so, they must have a very exact operational life!

They say bad luck comes in three Alex, as does good luck. Let's hope that's the end of one and the start of the other. Look forward to hearing the good news.
