You have to adjust that little switch on the side of the carb That I don't think I knew. Played with that today and a vacuum guage, welded the worn part (need a replacement one of them please Matt) on the side of the carb that means there is now adjustment left and my vario is doing alsorts of wierd things like dropping of the revs but also holding on the revs at junctions (that is my blobby welding I think). Will play more in the next few days. As you look at the vacuum pump from the front of the car, which pipe goes where on the bottom?? (Nick, magazine star he is, has got me worried)

As you look at the vacuum pump from the front of the car There is no pump, it's a valve See this thread. essexdafs.proboards.com/thread/622/overdrive-work-on-55 as 55 is same idea. VarioValve.jpg by macplaxton, on Flickr 1) Goes to air cleaner 2) Goes to vacuum source 3) Vacuum to primary unit outer chambers (Pushes primary outer sheaves in towards middle / overdrive) 4) Vacuum to primary unit inner chambers (Pulls primary outer sheaves out away from middle / kickdown) A) Overdrive solenoid B) Kickdown solenoid

Do they go straight down?? You say 3 is the outer one, is that the smaller or larger pipe on the primaries?? For the life of me I can't see which goes in and which goes out

3 and 4 should go to solid metal pipes with run down the bulkhead and underneath the car.

Straight down. 3 should go to the outer chambers, that is, the unflared metal pipe. This should be the short unflared pipe coming out of the primary. 4 should go to the inner chambers, that is, the flared ended metal pipe. This should be the longer pipe with the flared end coming out of the primary. Here's the 66 manual picture: DAF 66 Vacuum System Schematic by macplaxton, on Flickr

Shaun...what have you welded,a pic please...will supply what you need but need to know what it is 1st The movey metally bit that touches with the little wheely springy bit on the microswitch Pics this weekend. It's the cam plate in the above diagram that has a wavy edge that opens and closes the microswitch on the carb. It's actually part of the carburettor. The plate has a ball half of a ball 'n' socket joint bolted to it and the plate itself is bolted onto the end of the throttle spindle. I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it with a welder. It just cannot wear that much. (Methinks you were attempting to adjust the wrong thing Shaun)
