Hi folks,
Sue's '70 33 (called Celia) has rather a rough ride. More noticeably at the front, she tends to bang about on rough surfaces.
Do you think it's time for a front shocker rebuild, or does anyone have any other possible solutions? She has lovely new tyres which made a difference but she's still not all that smooth...
I'm not expecting miracles but on the poor roads o' Bristol I am certain a DAF 33 could cope better!
Many thanks!
Howard

DAF Nut
Those who say it can't be done, should not interupt the people doing it !

Check for any wet spots around the struts Howard. If none are found there still might be a need for the rebuild. Test the travel & recoil by pushing hard on the wings.

or does anyone have any other possible solutions? Chop it in for a Hydropneumatic Citroen?

Ahem, sorry Howard, the serious version now... Check the front spring. Despite low mileage (c.20k) Dilly was suffering from old age in the spring department to the point where the offside was touching the bump stop and the nearside wasn't far behind: Offside front spring by macplaxton, on Flickr Nearside front spring by macplaxton, on Flickr

As Mac suggested, or seizing struts - can be caused by the rods themselves bending. Daf must have been aware of the possible issue because they included figures for run-out in the rebuild instructions. If you suspect that, loosen the ring-nut at the top of the damper a couple of turns and see if it improves things - the play in the nut once it's loosened will allow a slightly bent rod to move freely. Sadly, you can't leave 'em like that because they leak If she's close to the bump stops then the simple solution is to remove the bumps - if you manage to bottom the suspension you're probably driving too fast

I must add, I was taking the pictures above and not in the driving seat. I did get rid of the old spring in the end. DSCF3494.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
