Hi all, I fitted a pair of front dampers yesterday to my V66 and thought I'd share some photos. The job is straightforward enough, the only real problem I encountered was the removal of the 51.something mm nut on the top of the strut which looks like this:
This nut was VERY tight and had been for 34 years. The Haynes manual suggests a special tool but I opted for a large pair of Stihlsons, a thick steel bar to brace the strut and a can of this,
I first removed the nut on the top of the damper rod and the two bolts holding the top mounts,
This allows the suspension to droop fully and there is plenty of room to get to the strut inside the wing,
In the above photo you can see the "problem" nut on the top of the strut holding the damper assembly in, this took considerable effort to release.
Once the top nut is off the guide needs loosening and removing,
Then the innards can be removed and the remaining oil mopped up,
The new insert replaces the lot and comes with a new top nut,
These just fit in and the strut is bolted back into place,
The damper inserts are hard to find, I struggled to source any in the UK and got mine from Daf Hobby in Holland.

Nice work that man! I remember Matt telling me what the local snap-on man quoted him for a spanner of that size. Eye watering!

Eye watering! swissdave - 51.something? I've not looked at one recently, is it that big? 33grinder - How much? I've got a DAF strut somewhere, will need to measure it, as I've only a Volvo 9995862 tool here which is around 49mm. I think the V66 one is 9995877 (7-99-535637). The damper inserts are hard to find, I struggled to source any in the UK and got mine from Daf Hobby in Holland. Kayaba? KYB 665009. I got KYB rear ones in the past (443063) no problem from the local motor factors: Rear Shock Absorbers KYB.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr

Great post. I have mine ready to fit but it's not far up the list yet. That will help a lot. Did you unbolt the strut top with wheels laden and then jack to allow full droop?

Rich, I tried ordering a pair from 3 different UK suppliers one after another who all failed, that's why I had to get them from Holland. The rears are easy to find, I got a pair cheaply from UK eBay, fitting them is my next job on the list. I will measure the nut when I get home later. Edit 48mm flat to flat, 50.8mm overall width, that Volvo tool of yours would have come in handy.
Andrejuan, I undid everything with it all jacked up but with the bottom suspension arm raised and supported a couple of inches from full droop.
