OK...time for a little brainstorming DAF people. I was driving SARGE, my 66-YA, just leaving an event at a rather slow speed when suddenly in appeared that the rear brakes locked up. SARGE came to a halt sliding on a dirt road. I attempted to reverse with no luck, I tried forward without success. The selector seemed a bit funny and would not fully engage. I then checked the parking brake and it was off and free. After jacking up the wheels they rotated freely. I managed to move the gear lever on the Primary to the Neutral position and it rolled freely. I checked th clutch and it appeared fine, the prop shaft appears to be in one piece as well as the shift linkage. Once back at DAF Central I raised the entire rear end and spun the wheels by hand but noticed the secondary pulleys were NOT moving as they should but CV shafts rotated with the wheels. I can turn the Primary by hand and then the Secondaries move as well, but NOT the wheels. Could be Secondary gearbox be gone? Something with the shift linkage (although it was inspected and seemed fine from underneath but shifting strangely)? I AM AT A LOSS John

if cv joints can be seen rotating at the inner gearbox end but the sheaths on the sam box are not rotating I would guess hes either dropped a differential pinion gear or has stripped a tooth somewhere.. there is no selectable gears in the secondary unit, the secondary is literally transferral of drive from sheaths to shafts..

the sticking of the wheels udner power would have been the gear going out of mesh and then being pinned in place, when you jacked the car up would ouw have allowed the two sides of the differential to move independantly and the offending gear to drop out completely, thus freeing up the differential to rotate freely by hand as you describe

BLOODY HELL....And NO 66 Variomatic Secondary in my inventory either. Wonder if Vince would notice his missing if I were to sneak down to Kingston, NY. John

pop it apart mate, it may have just dropped an idling gear off of a shaft
