I have an issue with my 66 which I hope someone can help with.
I noticed the other day that my lights had stopped flickering and the voltmeter was down about half way into the red. The alternator is still working because if I touch the regulator by the battery you can hear it whir and the engine tone drops. I have tried to adjust it, but it will only be on or off and when it's on the volt meter goes up into the danger red zone.
The volt meter has until now, always been in the middle of the green section when driving and the lights would always flicker. Is that normal?
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

The voltmeter sitting right in the middle of the green zone IS correct, but a digital voltmeter is the best thing to use when assessing the state of health of your car's electrics! The voltmeter half-way into the red means the alternator is not charging the battery properly, but even more of a problem is the voltmeter going into the red zone above the green-this will cook the battery and could cause a fire, aside from possibly damaging the alternator itself!
I also think the voltage regulator is damaged in some way, as it seems to be delivering either NO current to the battery or FAR too much. Repairing voltage regulators is a complex operation and best left to the experts, of which I know one! Whereabouts is your car and would the address & contact details of the experts help?
