Hi all, just a quick question, I've started work on the orange dad 33 again and hope to have it on the road again over comming weeks, anyway it will star easily in neutral but if you try to start in forward or reverse it is as if the car is trying to move with the starter, like having a manual in gear and clutch stuck, any ideas? As I assumed the centrifugal clutch couldn't stick out?! Any advice appreciated. Cheers Donal

Most likely course is clutch shoes have become detached and are jamming the clutch so it is engaged all the time.

Sorry was in a hurry yesterday, just to clarify it's not the shoes that come adrift, but the linings that come away from the shoes and get jammed.

Yes, I had a Daf 33 which had this problem. The clutch linings have probably become detached from the metal plates onto which they are glued and have become wedged between the plates and the drum, thus giving the effect of jamming the clutch and making the car jump when the starter is energised, unless started in neutral.
Unfortunately........ The only way to repair this is to remove the engine, thus giving access to the clutch. The parts are available, on an exchange basis, from DafHobby, and Essex Dafs may be able to assist, too! If you need a set of shoes to use as the exchange ones, I have a complete clutch assembly, together with shoes and springs if that helps. PM me if you want some advice.

Many thanks guys, I reckon you're correct, but I still can't fathom out, when both wheels are off the ground they don't spin until throttle applied, but when it's on the ground, it tries to creep forward!and is very difficult to start. I can move the clutch drum with my fingers but with a quarter inch of play rotating it it will move the car but does not rotate the engine!?! Anyway think it's time to remove the engine for a good look, is it much of a job to take out or are there any awkward bits I should be aware of?

The engine is about as easy as it gets to remove, I have never removed one but the general opinion is, you can take it out in an hour or less. Support it on a trolley jack and wheel it away from the car. If you look through these boards you will find lots of 'pics. and helpful jottings.

Hi Donal were abouts are you based, maybe someone close who can come over and help. I recently went over to show a fellow daffer how to remove his 44 engine to replace his prop shaft, all done and running again by tea time.

With a name like "PaddyDaf" I suspect you might emanate from the Emerald Isle! If so, north London's quite a distance, but if you're local I too am happy to lend assistance, tools, tea and general enthusiasm as and when I can! I also have TWO complete engines, if you need some parts!
