I think my DAF is poorly. It sounds as though it has started over revving when accelerating and feels reluctant to pull away when stationary or even accelerating out of a corner etc. It still drives and will get up to 30-40 mph too! Normally when you start it in gear with the handbrake on and apply a bit of throttle the car moves a bit, but not any more. I haven't had a look under the bonnet yet, but thought I'd ask first to get an idea of what to look at. Thanks for looking.

It sounds like it needs a little Daf T.L.C! Over-revving in any Daf can be caused by a number of things, but the more common ones are: 1/ The vacuum created by the engine and used to assist the belts to change up to a higher ratio isn't reaching the transmission. This can be because the valves that direct the vacuum aren't working properly or the pipes that carry the vacuum have become detached somehow. OR 2/ The vacuum IS reaching the transmission but the belts do not have the correct tension on them, so they are not changing ratio properly.
The above are Daf-specific, but as with any engine correct tuning & timing (plugs, points, filters etc.) help a great deal.
As to checking the above, the Autobooks give good guidance, but there's nothing like having a fellow Daffer show you how it's done! An explanation here would take too long, but feel free to PM me and I'll advise you how to go about it checking it (or I'd be happy to offer practical help & meet somewhere to see the car.)

Hi, thanks for replying.
I noticed under the bonnet that the vacuum thing is dangling loose and not held by the three rubber grommet bits. It clicks when you move the throttle.
Aside from that I didn't have much time before it got dark.
I have an autobooks and Haynes manuals so I'll do some investigating over the weekend.

Sorry, brain freeze-yes I know the car! If the vacuum valve clicks as the throttle is opened that's good news, as it should do that. The vacuum might still be being lost on its way to the rear of the car, but given that the belts have been changed I'd have thought the pipes would all be correctly connected but that's not to say they've become detached since they were fitted. Another thing to consider is the state of the diaphragms, although I think the previous owner replaced these.
