That's been puzzling me a little because neither book (Autodata or Daf original) mention shimming except on the Ovlov variants but I always thought they all had them

Ok. On that basis then, is the DAF clutch self-adjusting or is the Ovlov system of re-shimming an improvement. :? I'd trawl through my books, but I don't have them here.

Not sure, Mac, although they look like essentially the same cover plates in the books

Do they? They look different to me as the DAF one doesn't have three release arms for the de-clutch servo to operate.

Yeah, but that's just 3 bolts and some bent metal added to the back - can't see it affecting the basic engagement much (or at all??)

Now i was going to mention this y/day about the shims.. The way i understand it is..ONLY the Volvo 66 had shims which needed adjusting after a few hundred miles on a new clutch.. There is of course 2 different size clutch plates..a thin plate and a thick plate...thin plate for the 55,thick plate for the 66 As we all know, when Joe pulls the bell housing and finds shims because its a Mara coupe, what i have just said will be blown out of the water

Well only very late 55s or upgrades would have thin plate then as the earlier 55s had drum clutches. It wouldn't surprise me if the early 66s had thin plates either as they had three part riveted props. Trouble is if they don't auto adjust then they will be knackered in a shorter space of time. Volvo versions are shimmed for a 0.5mm gap and there were 6 thickness of shim. Gap to be checked every 6k miles and adjusted if out of spec.

Having removed the engine yesterday, today was time to strip his clutch to investigate the slipping and smoke: No shims, the linings are both 3mm thick (as specified by Mr Autodata but I the oil on the flywheel and soaked into that clutch plate might have something to do with it! The odd thing is there's not what I'd consider excessive wetness around the area - may well have been a slow seep over the time he's been standing, but better to do the rear seal anyway for safety while it's all out So that'll be one clutch plate, one rear oil seal and a couple of clutch bearings (again, seem fine but for good measure....). The pressure plate is slightly blued, but not distorted, cracked or grooved so I reckon it'll be good to go again. Oh, and it is completely different from the Ovlov one - it doesn't have the big hole in the middle for a start ;D

;D Another superb video Joe. ;D But really, you must repair that camera! The clock seems to be running too fast. I know the video can't have been speeded-up as knowing how fast you work the film is real time.
