For the past few weeks a massive cleanup has been underway to my workshop. Cleanup? Yes, still trying to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Irene in August (2011). Here are just a few photos before and after. Before: (the parts warehouse) After: Before: (the first work area) After: Before: (the storage/overflow garage, right of truck) After: It will still be a few weeks before I can even do any work in there but at least it is a start. I received word from the Council yesterday that they should begin River dredging very shortly to keep this from happening again (something that should have been done many many years ago, but due to the Enviromentalists, had been banned...and we paid the price). Mother Nature shows no mercy Matt. Today some good news and some bad.... The bad news is that I need a carb switch for "SARGE" FAST!!!!!I noticed a dangling wire and since they are solder connections I removed the switch for repairs. It fell apart in my hands as I loosened the two screws Apparently someone had tried to "fix" it before with electrical tape. The good news... I started to work on Sarge a little getting rid of the peeling paint on the wood bits at the top of his body (there is a surprising amount of wood used on this DAF, including the Gas Tank surround seen here at the back end) He will not be Concours but what Military Vehicle should be. Most of the repairs and maintanance was done "in the field"...but he will look 100% better without peeling Olive Drab paint. I also stopped by the paint shop today to check on the progress of Sandra's bits..... All the loose bits have been repaired, sandblasted, seam sealed and Epoxy Primer applied. Friday the paint will be delivered so these three pieces will get their Mimosa color. The car goes down next week. ;D John

I don't know why John can't get one from a local electronics shop, it's not as though they are anything special.

THANK YOU MATT ;D ;D ;D
Nick, I am on the phone to Dublin as I type this post. Rich P. and I are discussing what type of microswitch we are looking for and if they are a normal or abnormal switch. ;D ;D

Decided this morning to attempt to see how much damage the flood waters did to my backup 850cc 12 volt motor (it was stored on the bottom shelf in the warehouse and went completely underwater for 5 days). Luckily I did not drain the water from the block after the flood, although I was tempted. I guess that saved it from seizing up. As you can see it's a complete motor but because it no exhaust pipes water fill the sump. What drained out of the Drain Plug was about 5 quarts of 50/50 (water and oil). BUT....once the plugs were removed I could rotate the motor by hand. DAMN LUCKY...DAMN LUCKY!!!! Anyway to get to the point of all this. I'll be doing a small rebuild so that this motor can be used in POSTAL PETE (the spare 850cc I have waiting in Essex will be a backup for the Kalmar and for Butterscotch). It did not take long to break everything down... From what I can see of the sump and pistons everything looks great...NO Water Damage at all and best of all NO rust visable. Damn TOUGH LITTLE MOTORS !! John

That's a big relief John. I did not even know that you had an 850cc engine. Make sure you bring a big suitcase in August for the one we have saved for you.

That 850 was the spare for Butterscotch I told you about many many moons ago. It's a later model 12 volt unit I received from New Jersey which originally came from one of the electrified DAF 46 cars in Massachusetts. But 12 volt is good...at least I can have an Alternator. ;D John
