Collected the pickup this morning and it was a rather arduous journey as within 1 mile it became apparent that the vehicle would have to be towed home. Somehow in two days the engine has gone from a sweet runner to complete dog that im going to have to change completely.
She was producing thick plumes of black smoke, the big ends sounded like they were going to explode. So damage limitation came to mind of switch it off and tow it home so as not to damage the gearbox if the engine seized. Thankfully the rest of the car is good the transmission is silent and the gearbox really slick and the body and chassis are completly rust free.
Not very happy about this but I think with another engine it should still be within the value of the vehicle, I can get a running engine from the local scrappy for about £400 which will still have its turbo. So all in £1400 for it still seems ok.
Then im going to strip down the old engine and depending on how bad it is either rebuild and sell it as such or sell it off as individual components.

sounds like the timing has jumped to me.. over advanced pump would create those plumes of smoke and make it sound noiser than a ball bearing being clacked up and down a hoover pipe.. before you comdemn it get those cam covers off and check the marks are all ok

It really hope your right as that could possibly be put right with a new cambelt kit. The noise really did sound like classic big end though and so loud it could be heard in the car following. The dying turbo could also explain the plumes of smoke which were far worse when under load. I'll get it started and post a video up tomorrow.

So either it doesn't work or their was plenty. Do you think it would be better to sync up the laptop and run live diagnostics for oil pressure or borrow the cappilary gauge from the triumph?

Too bad you bought it after and not through E-Bay.... It would have been covered under the buyer protection plan and your money would have been refunded. Sounds as though you've purchased a big mess Paul. John

Well im looking on the bright side I have a vehicle with a strong chassis a good body, good suspension, brakes, steering and transmission.
The vehicle only cost £1k and ive found a replacement engine for £300 buy it now on ebay. Ive seen them sell as non runners for more than that and when its running again without issues they go for approx £2000. Yes I hadn't intended doing an engine swap but ive got it now and I should still have a good workhorse at the end of it.

id go capilliary mate, if the light didnt come on chances are the sensor isnt doing a great deal so wont give a true reading anyways The engine management warning light was on solid as well but with a blown turbo I would expect that to be on. When I said that the oil light didn't come on at all I don't think I was that clear in what I meant. Turn ignition on Oil light, glowplug light and few others come on and then go off when the engine is started. Handbrake warning is on steady whatever the case.
