Martin and I had a frustrating day with Animal's rear brakes today. Turned out we had the wrong cylinders. Martin made do but new items would be preferable. Animal is a 1972 66SL 1100cc.
Martin would like to know the part number for these, can anyone help?

Hmm, maybe that's for a later 66? It's not the same as Animal's....

According to the parts book it's either those ones or a 5/8" (15.875mm) bore version of the good ole "mini" type like the 33 uses (the type that's held in place by a big circlip). Brake Parts International list it as BWC5783 but it's POA so may not be available. Minisport have suitable listed here: www.minisport.com/mini-spare-parts/info_GWC1101.htmlfor Mini 850cc 1959-66 / 1275cc 1969-74 at £5.07 + VAT each but they're out of stock / dues soon. Part number from them is GWC1101. Note that the Mini ones have the roll-pin fitted on the "wrong" side of the bleed nipple for the Dafs so you'd need to drill a small hole in the back-plate for the pin (or remove it, never worked out why it's needed!) Mini version: Daf version: etA: you'll also need to swap the union from metric to imperial

My daughter runs a classic British Mini Cooper & we're fortunate to live near Mini Spares. May I recommend them for Mini (or equivalent) parts? Try www.minispares.com They're based in Potters Bar, in Hertfordshire & the staff are very helpful. Believe it or not, many parts for Reliant Robins come from the Austin/BMC/Rover parts bin too!

Ok. Let's sort this out. John, you're talkin Girling cobblers. Stand in the corner until you get the hang of this mish-mash brake system. (That I'm certain I've explained before ) Joe, nice loads of information to cover up the fact you don't have then definitive answer Besides, you're wrong. Pukka rear wheel cylinders for Animal would be 20.32mm (0.80") . Joe's smaller dimensions are only for LHD cars. On LHD cars with a brake servo, the servo operates on all four wheels. On RHD cars, the servo only operates on the front circuit (the remote servo is required as there's no room for one at the master cylinder with the steering in the way). Also strictly speaking and being a man of parts pedantry (also because I find it's a pain in the arse unpicking previous owner's improvement/conversion/alteration work) the original DAF cylinders have a M10x1 metric thread, which I don't recall Mini ones having. If no one has been at it before you, every union is M10x1. Did I throw a 66 axle in your direction Joe? That had fairly new NOS cylinders fitted. Should still be good, only thing I remember is that they were bathed in DOT 5 silicon. Anyway, I'm the early 66 brake daddy round 'ere now. ;D Edit: I'm out on the road and nowhere near my books either.

Fair one Mac - sure my parts manual only shows the one size (5/8) and didn't offer the ones on your old axle because I know Martin would rather have new but obviously they're there if needed. That said, there are plenty of sizes in the mini ranges and the 19mm / 0.75" ones (GWC1102) would be fine instead of 0.8. Will still need the mods but once done that's still easy and cheap cylinders in the future

I was being very tongue-in-cheek (unusual at that time in the morning and considering how long I'd been up for). I'm awake now and will check the part numbers... Ok, I'm 12 thou out on the wheel cylinder diameter. I shall self-flagellate myself with an old Vario belt. Here's the 66 parts book extract (you'll have to tell me what parts book you have there Joe ):

It's an Ovlov branded 66 for (supposedly) all models. Guess they might have dropped some of the early versions off the list either b design or accident

Must be "Vol vo 66" all models, that is all Vo lvo 66 models, not including DAFs In the "not everything is on the internet" thought, Brakes International were very helpful to me on the phone with regards to discs and callipers back in the day. Think Rochdale is the main office. Use the good old fashioned phone. I got my NOS master cylinder for that car from the club that runs t'other forum. Always worth dropping them a line. Now from my dodgy memory, the rear cylinders I picked up were via Ebay and they were in Girling boxes. Can't remember what the parts number were and haven't found the receipt either.
