hi , some may have seen this ells where and thanks for everyone help so far . my new 33 wont change fro the first ratio to the next . im new to dafs so go easy on me ! first problem identified is one belt is old and thinner than the other , the gap in the back drum is lots bigger than the other side . i think with help the pipes are all in the right place any ideas very welcome . here's some pics of this and that , if you spot any problems please shout at me thanks in advance for any help , cheers d

Hi Toastie, and welcome to the ED forum The more I look at those photos, the more I'm wondring if you have a broken diaphragm in one of those secondaries. Just seems like an awfully wide gap for what looks like not much tension. If it is that then it's probably not the end of the world, I'm sure something can be sorted

hello old chap , long time no see whats a secondaries ?the back drum ? and is there a way to test it ? iv done the blowing down the hole thing , maybe if a loosen them right off and see if the gap closes ? cheers d

Loosening them right off then re-doing the tension would be a good start - I guess it's possible that the thinner belt has also stretched, in which case you could get wildly different gaps like that.
While the tension's off, try opening that "suspect" pulley with a large screwdriver. Get it right down in the base and try levering the two halves apart - you shouldn't be able to if the spring's ok cos it's bloody strong! on't be absolute proof if you can't, but if you can then it means there's a problem there.

Yes, I'd use a bloomin' long breaker bar and keep fingers well away from the pulleys unless you 'chock' them open with a spark plug. That would let you have a good look at the pulley faces whilst you're there.

I would first check to see that all the Vacuum hoses are the correct diameter (from the photos it appears that they are not) and that the first step in diagnosis would be to replace ALL the lines including the four at the Variomatic (securing them with new jubilee clips) If you have done the blow test on the Primary (front most set of pulleys) and there you feel the air coming back in your face from the same tube then the diaphrams are OK. Also the EVKM (vacuum valve) might just be the culprit...disconnect the large tube going to the manifold, plug the other pipes and blow. If you hear air escaping then the valve needs to be replaced. (rebuilding will do no good in this instance) I just had the same experience with the EVKM on my DAF 66-YA and need to find a replacement. John

cheers for advise , so step by step , il slack it all off and see it the drum goes together and if its strong . now what pipe should i be using ? this is all random bits as some was missing and should i have a clip on all of them ? i can do that then i think i understand the next bit but i will sort the pipes out first thanks chaps . d

Talking on the electric vacuum valve, it's a small point but have you got the "hill descent" button on the dash switched on? That will keep it in low ratio all the time and stop it going over about 30mph. So will a faulty brake light switch if the lights are on all the time!

hello , no the switch is off (i guess off is with the light off) and the brake lights are working properly .
