Hi folks, my name is John and I have just purchased VUF from Ken and brought her to live with me in Braintree. Found the drive from North London in heavy rain and darkness a bit scary, but fortunately uneventful, had not driven a Daf before. A look at the car today confirms that it is just as described or probably better, thanks Ken! So far a trip to town for shopping and quick oil change then a run to the local tip to dump some rubbish and the old oil. Was able to out accelerate a Reliant Rialto from the lights, and confirmed to my surprise that it does do 70mph. Plans: Keep VUF in good order and try to use her at least once a week. I'm afraid I am prone to making little "improvements" so if you are of a sensitive nature, apologies in advance

Glad to hear you are enjoying her John! Yes, they will do 70mph but don't be fooled by the guages, they do like to lie...my 33 will be doing about 63mph when 70mph shows on the guage and about 78mph will be around 70mph in real life. I have once maxed out on the speedo and got 90mph but it was only 81mph or something lowly like that - it felt epic though! ;D

"Yes, they will do 70mph but don't be fooled by the guages"
True, my van at 60 on the clock is 53 -54 according to the magic lady, I'm pleased that it is possible to use big roads I expected to have to avoid them, the big trucks are limited to about 52mph and I am happy on the motorway as long as I can maintain this or a bit more. I don't like being overtaken by lorries, I didn't expect the Daf to be able to keep ahead of them, so it's a pleasant surprise.
"He obviously wasn't trying"
I did wonder, I have had a Rebel and a Kitten and remember them as quite lively of the mark, but it was a long time ago.

Congrats John. Surprisingly little VUF is happiest making other cars look silly (as in the case of the Reliant. ) They are quicker from a dead start and comfortable at motorway speeds. Keep us updated at to any help needed or any "modifications" John

Two questions: 1. Should I post my questions here or start a new thread? 2. Cooling system: Having only ever had water cooled cars, how does the cooling system work? Front fan, is this off the crank, or dependent on the fan or dynamo belt? Is there a thermostat? I remember the beetle having flaps controlled by a thermostat. I noticed in a picture on here somewhere that there are two flaps in front of the cylinders, how are these controlled, how can you check them?
Perhaps thats more than 2 questions so I will stop for now.
