Cooling system is forced air, there is no thermostat. The impellor is driven directly of the crank pulley so is independent of the generator belt. Air pulled through is directed across both cylinders and also over the exhausts, the latter of these provide the cabin heating. There is a flap in the air intake which is controlled manually this can make some of the combustion air be taken from the cylinder shrouds and should be used in cold weather. There is also a sliding air damn that should be positioned to block the grill in very cold conditions in all honesty you wont find yourself using that very often at all. This shows the flap im talking about. The rest of the manual can be found here on Spunkymonkey's website dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/33manual.html

Two questions: 1. Should I post my questions here or start a new thread? 2. Cooling system: Having only ever had water cooled cars, how does the cooling system work? Front fan, is this off the crank, or dependent on the fan or dynamo belt? Is there a thermostat? I remember the beetle having flaps controlled by a thermostat. I noticed in a picture on here somewhere that there are two flaps in front of the cylinders, how are these controlled, how can you check them? Perhaps thats more than 2 questions so I will stop for now. Ditto what Paul just said. Other than air, the only other coolant is the engine oil. You'll see an exposed air cooler which keeps that in check. Do check the oil levels regularly as they can burn a little oil, but 'little' is the operative word really, they don't hold too much in the first instance. Otherwise, as to Q1: I guess the best place for your thread would be under the 'Show us your DAF' section and we can move this thread under that section if you like. Really though, we are quite laissez faire - not that anal about such things here!

Thanks for that both of you. I am reassured, I had assumed that the cooling relied on a belt, but after reading that I had a look under the bonnet and it's quite obvious you are right, but I hadn't previously noticed.

It has always been fun to pull into a full service Petrol station and ask the attendant to check the coolant level on my DAF. Walk into your nearest factor and ask for a VW Beetle thermostat...watch the reaction of the under 30 sales clerk. ;D Never fear about asking any questions here John...Better safe, than sorry. John

Grrr the real Beetle, the air cooled one has a thermostat, it operates flaps in the cowling, honestly.

^^^^ I know that jrr. John was napping when he quoted you. He doesn't have much time for VW Bugs, so I'm not sure how familiar he is with the finer points of the car in question
