Evening all
Ive just entered the realm that is Daf ownership with a daf33 - love it!
Need a few parts and hoping some of you lovely lot can help
*12V wiper motor - mine just gets hot suggesting maybe a short in the motor winding.
*drivers door lock barrel - the one on the car doesnt work.
*Ignition barrel - The one on the car works to release the steering lock but it currently has a second key in the dash acting as the ignition - keen to put it back as DAF intended.

Hi,
Where about are you? I'm sure we'll have some of those spares in Colchester.
With regards to the key, what year is your 33?
Early ones had a dashboard ignition, later ones had it on the steering column. 1972 I think was the changeover when it went from 6V to 12V. On the 12V you have a rubber bung where the barrel would be. I've used that for a cigarette lighter to give a power point which is handy. But, new MOT regulations will fail a car if steering lock doesn't work...so if you don't have a key on the column then you don't have that worry. The steering locks are generally reliable in my experience. It's also with checking the connector coming from your steering column barrel as the plastic connector blocks are brittle and can break.
I'm sure Matt will be on line tomorrow and will be able to tell you what we have in the parts barn.

Hey Guys thanks for the responses,
Im based in gloucester, the car is a 71, but it is definately running 12v components so mustve been converted at some point as i think a 71 wouldve originally been 6v.
Im not going to chuck away the wiper motor, im sure theres parts internally that are salvageable.
regards

Maybe worth checking the stamping on the casing. 12v on a 6v motor without a shunt might make it a bit toasty.

whats the easiest way to remove it?

Hi NNL and welcome You're quite right that, on a '71, your car would have been 6v. The change to 12v was in Sept 1972 iirc. It's quite likely that whoever converted it left the 6v wiper motor in there. They'll run on 12v intermittently but will overheat and suffer damage long term. Does it operate at all or just sit still and get toasty? One thing to check is that the linkage hasn't seized - they can rust solid where the pivots come through the scuttle. Quickest check for that is to loosen the nuts that hold the posts in place - if they're seized then the whole post will start turning. If that works then they can be freed up but its not a fun job because of access. For the drivers door lock, do you mean that the key won't turn in it or that it turns but doesn't lock? If the key wont turn then it's either a seized lock or the key and lock don't match. In either case, if you're up for a little DIY locksmithing, instructions for altering a lock to fit a key (which are basically the same for freeing up a seized lock) are available here: www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/index.php/page/38.htmlPlease note that I posted that at least a couple of years before Practical Classics ran a "how to" on the same thing For the ignition barrel, it may be just the switch that failed, in which case you can replace it on the existing barrel, or it may be (quite common) that the cast "cage" inside the barrel has broken. In either case, useful hints on sorting it can be found here: www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/index.php/page/15.htmlYou may be noticing the pattern by now - the problems you're facing are fairly common ones for these cars but really nothing serious if you can drive a few hand tools Joe eta: Incidentally, if your car is on road, or likely to be by the 1st weekend in July, would you be interested in popping up to Lichfiled (just north east of Brum) for the Cars in The Park show there? It's a really good (and free) 2 day event (you don't have to do both days) and "show car standard" is not required - the public absolutely love to see our cars in "in use" condition - much to the dismay of shiny MG owners

Did you? I've lost count of the number of times they've repeated subjects. Must be 20 years since I regularly bought a copy.
