I need to replace Priscilla's clutch. She's a DAF66 of 1.3 litre flavor.
We located a few pressure plates today but cannot be certain which is correct. Some had four springs, others had 6 and there seemed to be two different sizes.
I'm also told that it should have 'shims' whatever they are...crikey!
Does anyone have a reference photo of what the correct item should look like?
We seem to have a couple of good'uns which have minimal wear. Or am I being a tightwad and should buy new? In which case would a R4, R5 etc clutch if same year fit and do the job? They appear on eBay cheap enough but I don't want to buy wrong and can't seem to find any more info regarding the DAF items...
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Pete.

Well Pete, there are good jobs done and arfur jobs. I'll expand on this more later after giving it some thought.

I would advise against fitting a second hand clutch if it can be avoided. The friction faces wear to match the flywheel and pressure plate they were first paired with. If you do go the secondhand route check the springs aren't rattling around, both friction faces are evenly worn and have plenty of meat left on them. Also check the splines are clean and slide easily on the shaft from the bell housing.
Shims Pete are little wafers of metal that you use to set a clearance between moving parts. If the clearance is to little you add a shim and if too great you take one away.

Hmm, is it not just the pressure plate I need to change? Or do I need to bite the bullet and buy a whole reconditioned unit from Danny?

No, you don't need to bite the bullet. Just careful component selection, I'll explain later... (off to work again )

Hmm, is it not just the pressure plate I need to change? Or do I need to bite the bullet and buy a whole reconditioned unit from Danny? That depends on why the clutch is slipping. If its weak springs in the pressure plate allowing slippage then you may get away with changing just that but I would change the friction plate as well as if its been slipping for any length of time the friction surfaces will have worn low. If its slipping purely due to friction plate wear the chances are you could just change the friction plate.

Thing is, when she broke down the recovery driver helped push her (nose in) into my garage. Like most garages mine has a multitude of uses. It also stores a chest freezer along with mops and other cleaning items that Mrs G likes to use. Pushing her up the sloping driveway darn near killed the pair of us and so I was happy just to be able to shut the door...BUT, she is not parked in the usual manner which means she is in the way. So if I'm going to pull the engine then I really only want to do it once and be done with it, all sorted out in a day.

If you want it sorted in one day then you need to have a full replacement to hand new or used is up to you. You may not need it all but sods law dictates if you haven't one part that will be the one needed.

The chances are you'll get away with just the friction plate. The pressure plates on these have no diaphragm spring to weaken or fail and, to be honest, a little light grooving on a pressure plate never really hurt anyone, any more than a bit of wear on a brake disk has (despite what Kwik Fit would have you believe ) Handy photo ref for the plates etc in the last 30 secs or so of this vid btw Also: and: Note that the flames are special Marathon Coupe kit that may not apply to yours
