Fitted the vario unit I picked up a few weeks ago and pulling away (with full size belts) has been a pleasure. Only done about 50 miles since, is it fixed?? Not sure, revs have dropped. At 70KPH I am now doing 3500rpm. Anyway, thats not why Im here tonite. Reversed out of my drive today, and lost all drive. Rear wheels locked and even in neutral I and the wife had to force it off the road with the rear wheels skidding. I had it recovered to work, and it isnt the brakes which I first thought. Prop doesn't turn at all, not even when jacked up and put in drive and revved, it just twitches Any idea's of what to check first?? Other than if its insured for fire, 'cos I really feel like burning it :-( Shaun.

Don't like the sound of that Shaun.
If it's the vario that's gone then of course we will replace it FOC.

You've killed the prop of course! Like this: Don't bin the prop if you replace it. The main part of it may come in handy in the future for refurbing.

Im not sure I agree with you there Mac. If the prop had gone yes you wouldn't get drive but it also wouldn't seize up the rear wheels.
If the rear wheels are locked with the vario in Neutral then the problem has to be Vario gearbox back.

Cheers for the replies chaps. Needing to know either way wether it was the prop or not I just pulled the whole vario out and the prop now turns freely :-)
I then whipped the inspection cover off the but with the air bellows on and found a large piece of metal floating loose with teeth marks chopping through it. (picture will be uploaded later).
Then we shall start trying to see where it came from.
Shaun.

Sorry Shaun It's always luck of the draw with used items. Needless to say we have others and you are welcome to a replacement.

Cheers Nick. And Matt, thanks for the offer mate. Just to clarify though, there is NO bad feelings over this, it is the love of old cars that keeps us busy at weekends. This latest mishap has also shown me why there wasn't a massive improvement in the rev range, This is from the nearside. I saved the ones from my old vario before I scrapped it, so easily sorted. And this is the 2 bits of metal found jammed in the primary drive: After chatting to Matt today, he told me off for binning my old unit :-D But when my scrap man came in today I collared him, and he hasn't weighed it in yet, so it will be returned hopefully tomorrow. Then over the next few days I can put my old primary and diaphrams in with the new secondary and belts. And hopefully sorted. Shaun. Oh, what are the bits of metal???
