This should give you a target to aim for. My 6v mk1 44 turns over at not a terrible speed.
That was a while ago but she does now run quite nicely.

Thanks, Paul, that's very useful. 'Lazy' seems to turn at half that speed, which is pretty poor.

No problem mate. These are tough little motors and they don't need much cranking to fire when set up right. From memory Tilly was turning over at roughly half the speed Sophie does and fires pretty quickly regardless.
Mine wouldn't turn over at all when I first got it I had to rebuild the starter out of two to get one that worked well. Tested the armatures in a growler to get the better one. Also check your engine earth, and battery earth, it doesn't take much to slow them down with a 6v system.

Sue's car, Celia, does indeed churn over smartly enough but only fires when you let go of the key.....

Lazy Update ! Removed and cleaned the engine earth strap and related contacts today. Unfortunately, it didn't make any difference to the function of the starter ! I decided to go ahead and jump the thing with a 12V battery parallel to the 6v. Last time, this had spun the starter fast enough to start the engine, but this time it made very little difference as the starter continued to be sluggish. I think this proves my previous conclusion as wrong : I considered taking the whole unit apart, but didn't bother as I really don't expect that 'ye olde Bosche starter' would need a rebuild after only 15K miles ! Well... I suppose that even "Deutsche Qualitat" parts can go wrong after 42 years of mostly sitting... Next step : starter and solenoid disassembly ! In case I get things wrong... Does anyone have a known working 6V starter ?

Shame we did not read this earlier as we spent a lot of time in the parts barn this afternoon. I think we have some 6v starters but Matt will know best. As to whether they are any good though...

Thanks gentlemen ! I expect that what I will find inside the starter is corrosion rather than wear, but it's always good to know that a spare can be found for non-Porsche prices !
Oh, if you do go rummaging around Aladdin's cave : I still need a front grille - even a cracked one would be better than the one on the car, which has a large bit missing ! A concave glass headlamp would also be nice to keep things period-correct, though a pair of cheap Wipacs off ebay would be just as good for the MoT.
