Wow! has it really been a year since I updated this???
That could be because the poor old girl's hardly moved for the past 3 or 4 months. Some of you might remember that I was getting a little worried about a rattle from the engine area at anything over about 50mph. That got fairly rapidly worse until it was happening at anything from about 30 upwards sometimes. So she sort of got put to one side until I could investigate.
She's also had the same bit of white string holding her engine in place since the last ED meet, and had developed a blow from one of her hotspot pipes. Given that her MOT is due again this week (booked in for Thursday), I finally had to tackle at least the mount and the exhaust, so engine came out this morning.
While it was out I was planning to change her big ends to rule them out as far as the rattle was concerned but I wanted to check the propshaft splines as well because they were the only other thing I could think of to be making the noise. There was very slight play in them and, seeing as it was getting later than planned, I decided to grease the crap out of them and put her together to see what happened.
So, replacement mount in and copious amounts of exhaust bandage around the pipes (don't want to remove them just yet but couldn't face welding them), and out on the road to test.
The noise has gone! Happy doesn't quite cover it to be honest - it had been a real worry over time but, even if it does come back, I know what it is and know it's not serious ;D

RESULT! So pleased for you that it's not an engine matter Joe. Now, go get that MOT!

MOT prep finished today:
Handbrake working again (seized lever behind the vario) - check. Horn working (never use it but hitting with a hammer cured it) - check Underside washed, wire brushed and re-waxed, no rust - check Lights, wipers and washers - check Seatbelts exist - check Doors bonnet and boot open & close - check Exhaust is exhausting where it should - check Tyres are round, black and knobbly - check Wheels turn with steering wheel (front only) - check Bearings quiet - check Brakes aren't broken - check Nothing falling off - check
Now to relax and approach Thursday with confidence in a first time pass. Yeah, right! ;D

Ok, not terribly happy with that. It's a fail on: N/S/F wheel bearing slightly noisy O/S handbrake lever restricted movement Exhaust not supported Handbrake below required efficiency (21%) Why I'm not happy is: Checked both wheel bearings on Saturday and they're fine - there's slight noise from the speedo cableChecked both handbrake levers at the same time - the n/s is looser than the os but they both move fully when the handbarke is operated The exhaust mount fail was the spliced rope loop that's been on there for the past 2 MOTs that the same guy passed her on. It's still there and it's still holding but he won't allow rope now. Finding those thin (12mm) rubber rings is just about impossible round here - all anyone lists is the 14mm modern type that won't fit in the mounts Checked on the way home and the handbrake will lock both rear wheels at 30 mph on a dry road, leaving twin black stripes. That is (a) more than 21% and (b) an automatic pass anyway if it can lock the wheels. Still, he's the tester - though for how much longer on our cars I haven't decided yet!

FWIW, I'd give him a kick up the arse. Then sit him down for a ten minute chat to explain the error of his ways.
Tin rings? 12mm. Tell me more.
