After the last couple of slightly smart-arse posts I figured I sould be honest and admit that the Snow strop hit shortly after I'd posted. I'd reset the (too high) float level in the carb and took her for a spin round the yard to try out. On the way back, cut out and no restart! The good side of that is that, having the fault happen, let me find out why. She had spark and she had enough fuel for the accelerator pump to squirt, but popping the top off the carb showed the level in the float bowl almost a full 10mm below where it should be. So no fuel delivery. Having a fuel pressure gauge to hand, sure enough there was zero pressure from the fuel pump. The pump itself is fine (pulled it off and checked) so that only leaves a problem with the pipe or tank. Seeing as the problem is intermittent, it can't be a blocked pipe (it's rigid nylon so cant do the break-up-internally-and-make-a-flappy-valve trick) and it didn't clear with the fuel cap removed (so it's not a blocked vent). That only leaves crap in the tank getting sucked up against the outlet. I ran out of time today but, weather permitting, I'll drop the tank tomorrow and fish out the offending debris - obviously, with photo to prove the diagnosis

The plate does look good though, doesn't it.
I guess Snowstrop is pulling ahead on this bout eh Joe? Just when you think it's all over......... then she pounces!
Any joy with Vee?

Snowdrop made the classic novice's mistake of showing her hand, Ken. Cut out, try to play hardball, not noticing that the bloke with the keys was taking the top off her carb to see if there was fuel in there - fuel in the tank or pipes doesn't count with a cut-out while running If we hadn't needed to get to the shops for dog food she'd be beaten into full submission by now ;D Didn't get a chance to look at Vee I'm afraid - she's behind an engine-less 55 that I didn't fancy pushing on my own. There's more here tomorrow, so watch this space....

"I'll have her running in 15 minutes". Now, I wasn't talking literally when I said that but, of course, Matt got the stop-watch out! And I missed it by about 10 seconds which I'm claiming as the time it took me to find the jerry can of fresh fuel ;D If you look closely at the photo you'll see that I was so confident I didn't even get out of my slippers for this one

According to the laws of Electricity (Ohm's Law etc.,) and the relationship between voltage and amperage, IN THEORY there's no difference between a 6 volt and a 12 volt system. A 6 volt system uses double the amperage for the equivalent wattage; i.e., a 6 volt 55 watt headlight bulb runs at just over 9 amps (55 divided by 6=9 and 1/6ths amps) whereas at 12 volts it runs at just over 4.5 amps (55 divided by 12=4 and 7/12ths amps)
The reason why 12 volts is easier to use is that as the amperage doubles, the thickness of the wiring required to carry it increases 4-fold (Square of current loadings, not linear) so with a higher voltage of 12 volts the wiring can be MUCH thinner, and therefore easier to work with and current losses are therefore less.
That's also why 6 volt batteries have double the amperage of the 12 volt ones of the same size; half the voltage, therefore double the amperage.
That said, there's nothing wrong with a 6 volt system if properly maintained.

We met some of these when we were down, they are known as the Devil's Coach Horse. I don't like the idea that they can bite us and break the skin I guess its check the floor monsters before jumping under car ;D www.gardensafari.net/english/small_beetles.htm
