Cheers Guys.
Today saw everything put back together. The grille is more damaged than I originally thought. I need to compare it to an undamaged one to get it right. The main problem is that the top bit is canted forwards by about 10 degrees or so which makes it difficult for the bonnet catch to engage. The lights are all sorted and work ok.
I will pop over to the garage later tomorrow and paint it all.
The other issue is that Vee is being very reluctant to start, nothing to do with the bump either. It will turn over but verrrrry slowly and might catch just as you think it is all over (if you are lucky). If not the battery will quickly flatten. New battery leads haven't sorted it. Not sure what it is. Maybe tired starter motor?
Sorry, no pics, forgot the camera.

The slow cranking could be tired starter (easily sorted with a bit of TLC on these) or a less-than-perfect engine earth. The original earth strap is underneath at the back of the engine and generally pretty reliable but 6v systems tend to demand perfection. I'll add it to the Saturday list to take a look

Hmm, never thought of the engine earth. Thanks Joe. I have a friend near to the garage who has a posh Optimate charger. Vee's 6v battery is being charged as we speak. I have the 6v charger I bought recently but the Optimate sounds much cooler. Vee was cleaned with some instant valet spray and wiped down to get rid of all that dust and looks ok (apart from that front end). The interior was started re: valeting and is coming up well. I found the original dealer decal for the rear screen and that has now been replaced and looks cool. I stuck on the FRL sticker and will put on the bling bits on Saturday. Vee needs a chrome trim for the o/s indicator (I only realised it needed one when the replacement arrived from Matt and Pete). I also need to lower the drivers side windscreen wiper as it sits too high. Minor stuff but part of the bonding process ;D

Forgot to add that the rear has been blinged up with the addition of nice new stainless indicator lens screws. They're important you know!

I would also check the Coil as well as a possible weak Starter Ken.
If the coil is not putting out a proper spark this will also account for a slow or difficult start.

I managed to start Vee with a little assist from a starter pack. She trundled her way to the garage and proceded to sit there for a while just ticking over whilst I brushed away all of the dust from the previous bodywork episode. Here's a snap of the rear end, complete with FRL sticker: Hope you like the new stainless rear light screws. Don't they look cool? What do you mean you can't see them? Anyway, here is a shot of the old dealer sticker that looked to have fallen of some time ago. A bit of a clean and on she went. The ED sticker will also be put on soon. The Dafhobby sticker is on the o/s rear screen and looks quite cool. I put on a new earth strap as it was one of the possible suggestions put forward as to the 'rrrrrrr r r r r r r r r r r r r click' noise that has greeted every attempt to start Vee upon leaving Essex Daf Central. Maybe she is trying to tell me something. Maybe Essex Dafs can only work whilst in Essex? Something to do with a bizarre mixture of ley lines, Essex chickens and Matts tea. Who knows? Seems like the starter motor is at death's door, however, help is at hand at a point in the near future, once more important things have been sorted.

Hi , on a slightly "off-track" note .... seeing the " Gillham Motors Ltd " Brighton sticker in your back window got me thinking ..... .....as I was born about 1 mile from George Street , Brighton ! Turns out Mr Gillham was a very enterprising man - www.sussexpostcards.info/publishers.php?PubID=119 and the garage survived until beeing closed in 1997 ! The buildings now a fabric warehouse / flats . Good luck with the starter/ley lines/Essex chickens and Matts tea !

Hahaha, cheers mate.
Had a visit from Andrew today in his brown 33. What a nice chap! He bravely let me have a go of Pooh and oh what a different car. Very nippy indeed and despite his protests, much more aggressive anchors than Vee's. I actually had a grin on my chops when we got back.
I think an overhaul of the brakes with some new shoes and so on is in order. What a difference and they gave me much more Daf orientated confidence. Oddly Vee started just as Pooh (and Andrew) pulled up outside the lock up. Spooky or what!
Andrew made an observation or two whilst looking over the car. Firstly, the revs at idle were too high. This was lowered slightly but they still remained above what they should be.
Secondly, the high idle had the effect of making the visible clutch thingy at the back of the engine spin. I believe that this shouldn't be happening (what do I know).
Can anyone advise please 'cos I really can't afford a new set of clutch shoes :0(

Glad you finally hooked up with Andrew, he's a really nice chap.
Gavina had similar issues when I got her albeit a leaky inlet manifold. Vee's problem may be a faulty manifold to carb gasket. If too much air is getting into the mix then the mixture might have been richened and the idle raised to get her running smooth. The clutch drum shouldn't be spinning at idle, it should kick in around +/- 900rpm.

Cheers Pete, he is indeed.
I shall investigate. Is it an ordinary paper type gasket? I only ask as I have a good range of gasket paper and rubber to hand.
Cheers
