Well it's time to do a proper story of the trials and tribulations I have canceled my mot for tomorrow. Don't think I am moaning I am not I think the boys that did her did a cracking job for the time and cost spent. I did know what she was like prior to her re birth.
Here goes.
Isabelle is in my brothers garage as it's been tipping it down so thank you Jeff. Today was set fire to it day. Not on purpose but it's electrics. Wipers were very slow indeed ie unless engine running they would not move. And they would not park. Oo re missis I love to park up with a new girl!!.
Any way there was no horn even though there was a new switch was on the dash a push switch. No washers but a pump and a flick switch. No brake lights, no interior light or door buttons, no working down hill button, no fuse in small fuse holder ( the one on its own) new wire from under the bonnet to some where lots of new blue wire very thin. And a black wire running to the back ( brake lights ? ) oh and I found a green wire dangling by the front drivers side wheel arch inside the car at the bulk head.
So it was time to sort that out first so a bullet fuse was ground down well the plastic was ground down and the fuse bit folded and put back on 30 amps should be about right as the other two little fuses were 25 amp
turn on ignition and hay presto still no horn, wipers ,washer, brake lights or down hill-button but what's this smoke smoke and yellow flashy things FIRE FIRE pull off battery cable and switch of ignition. Aha new blue small wire now black and Crispy so off it goes.
Investigate the horn first no horn yep no horn I mean no horn I guess it should be on the driver side at the front in the little pocket behind the driver side slam panel in front of the wheel. Quick rummage in brothers boxes viola 1 1948 6 v horn quick test on battery charger 6 v of course and squeak squeak a bit of a bash and beep beep. Wires made up to connect is bare wire connectors to the two spade connectors and you got it nothing. Little red square button on the dash that you push(aftermarket) ( read as crap) nothing.
ok getting serious now not a ten min job. Dash unscrewed. Steering wheel un bolted but could I pull it off could I beep so out came a drift and a lump hammer still no way so unbolted it from the dash and lowered the column. Speedo drive undone and yippee in we go ooooooher blue crispy wire every where and it's smouldering again I knocked the high beam switch pulling the dash out fire number 2 doup!
Crispy wires off and aftermarket switch in the bin find right dash switch for the horn it's the indicator switch and pull it. It pulls and works on the multi meter why why put a switch on the dash instead any way found a big yellow wire to the washer pump un necessary to be that big and it's now feeding the horn yippe it works. What's that big lump with a bunch of wires coming from it. it's the remains of the wiper switch . All belled out ok so got to work working it out now wired up and guess what wipers wipe quite fast in fact very fast yippee and guess what now park as well wow. Just need the rest of the switch now retaining screw in bit and washer bubble. Yer right I here you say. Well I do need some thing to go in the switch if I can get a rotten one or a retaining ring I will make something I am sure.
So where are we now oh yes dash panel drivers side.
As it's got 3 unnecessary holes in it and one even drilled through the body behind it also. To be fair I have some 70s fog lights and a driving light so might end up using them but only if they were drilled in sensible places so for now it's blanking grommets I think.
Any way got it all working but I have not checked the down hill button should it be on in or out and light up?
The next bit was to quickly look at the wobbly front wheel. Jack it up oh I can't there is no where that is strong enough passenger floor at the front has fallen through in 2 places fist sized holes 1 next to inner wheel arch and 1 in front of the seat by the mount. Oh the front sill end is missing also and sill is crispy and flaky. The jacking point is all crispy the only place is the spring centre by the dangly towing eyes.
Oh oh the front bs shock is wobbly as well and squirts oil out but what's this I hear new ones are available from euro performance.co.uk £89 each maybe We should post them as a supplier and make list up as a title for specialists or helpful people or companies.
Right then I guess I need some help the list goes.
1 Headlights on the way from the good old boys at essex dafs
2 driver side dash panel without extra holes. Will use blanking grommets for now
3 Washer switch dangles down on wires and stick fingers through it to turn on wipers have water pistol in glove box for washers. I have seen a washing up bottle with pipe pressed on to it poked through hole drilled on windscreen rubber befor.
4 horn get a cheesy cheep one from motor bike shop as 6 volt bikes are more common or fit bicycle bell some how.
5 ns front strut or rebuild kit or new but I bet she needs a pair.
6 heat exchangers weld up or make new it's only a pipe within. Pipe sort of
7 silencer I think I will end up making a new exhaust up probably in stainless eventually it's got to be cheeper. (May be lake pipes ) only joking do you remember them chrome lake pipes. Wo Wo
8 rear lens os a quick squirt with red paint on the inside not to thick but it works as it sits in the grooves and colours them back up a bit
9 Interior light missing what does it look like ?
10 floor pans make my self and beat in the ribs with a metal flat bar and sand bag
11 jack I guess it lives in the boot by the wheel and a tool roll and handle live along the back panel widths ways on the passenger side
12 wheel brace and kit as above with rubber band straps are these the same for the wheel.
13 fuse box mine has mounting screw tab broken off. It may aroldite on later but if ones about why bother
14 no air filter in box that's a start. I will set her up after I get her done she is a bit tappetty but I bet it's piston slap and valve train worn out. It's going to be my luck.
I have not even looked at her properly yet as I was trying for a easy mot. But I think it's out the window now for tomoz but hay Ho no worries I still love her and I am sure she will love me back soon. Give me a shout if you have any bits for her. Before I go hunting.
